1. Personal Pronouns (Personalpronomen)
What is a personal pronoun?
A personal pronoun replaces a noun (a person, animal, or thing) to avoid repetition. For example: Anuj lernt Deutsch. Er lernt jeden Tag. — here er replaces "Anuj."
Why pronouns matter
The subject pronoun tells us who performs the action and it determines the exact verb form. Change the pronoun, and the verb ending changes too.
Complete subject pronoun table
| Person | German | English | Hindi | Sounds Like | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st singular | ich | I | मैं | "ikh" | The speaker (yourself) |
| 2nd singular | du | you | तू / तुम | "doo" | One person you know well (friend, family) |
| 3rd singular ♂ | er | he | यह / वह | "air" | Male person or masculine noun (der) |
| 3rd singular ♀ | sie | she | यह / वह | "zee" | Female person or feminine noun (die) |
| 3rd singular ⬜ | es | it | यह / वह | "es" | Neuter noun (das), idea, impersonal subject |
| 1st plural | wir | we | हम | "veer" | Speaker + one or more others |
| 2nd plural | ihr | you all | तुम सब | "eer" | Two or more people you know well |
| 3rd plural | sie | they | वे / आप | "zee" | Multiple people or things |
| Formal (any number) | Sie | you (formal) | आप | "zee" | Strangers, officials, professional contexts |
Common Confusion
sie vs Sie: The lowercase sie means she or they. The CAPITALIZED Sie is the formal you, used with strangers or in professional situations. Sie is always capitalized, even in the middle of a sentence!Example:
Wie heißen Sie? (What is your name? — formal) vs Was macht sie? (What is she doing?)
Memory Trick
Think of it this way: "ich–du–er/sie/es — wir–ihr–sie/Sie." The last row always ends in -en (wir lernen, sie lernen, Sie lernen). That's your anchor!

2. Present-Tense Verb Conjugation (Präsens)
The regular conjugation formula
German infinitives mostly end in -en. To conjugate:
1. Remove -en to get the stem (e.g., lernen → stem lern-)
2. Add the correct ending for each subject.
Example with "trinken" (to drink / पीना)
| Subject | German | Hindi Translation |
|---|---|---|
ich | trinke | मैं पीता हूँ |
du | trinkst | तुम पीते हो |
er/sie/es | trinkt | वह पीता है |
wir | trinken | हम पीते हैं |
ihr | trinkt | तुम सब पीते हो |
sie/Sie | trinken | वे / आप पीते हैं |

|---|---|---|---|---|
ich | -e | ich lerne | ich wohne | ich spiele |
du | -st | du lernst | du wohnst | du spielst |
er/sie/es | -t | er lernt | er wohnt | er spielt |

sie/Sie | -en | sie/Sie lernen | sie/Sie wohnen | sie/Sie spielen |
Key Grammar Rule — Verb-Second (V2) Word Order
In a normal German statement, the conjugated verb always comes second, regardless of what comes first:✅
Ich lerne heute Deutsch. (subject first)✅
Heute lerne ich Deutsch. (time first — verb still second!)Notice how when "heute" moves to position 1, "ich" and "lerne" swap — the verb stays in position 2!
Tip — German Present Tense = 3 English Tenses
Ich lerne can mean: "I learn" / "I am learning" / "I do learn." One German form covers all three English forms!
